Thursday, 15 November

First, your homework: here are links to a five-part documentary on YouTube.  Each segment is about ten minutes long.  Please watch at least one segment and then post a comment that includes five bullet points to summarize important facts that add to your learning about Mesopotamia.
Winged Bull

Mesopotamia Part One

Mesopotamia Part Two

Mesopotamia Part Three

Mesopotamia Part Four

Mesopotamia Part Five

And if you have four more minutes and want to be old-school hip, you should give this a try:

Surprise!

Don't forget to post your comment after you watch.

Today we started with French.  I issued some handouts and we were introduced to the names of the characters used in the workbook: Lutin, Denis, Kimo, Mozart, Galaxo, and Super Stylo.  Next we had band with Mr. Grice.

Grade 7: adding integers

Grade 6: review of multiples

Grade 6: today's lesson on prime vs. composite numbers

Grade 6: prime/composite numbers 1-20
After recess we did math.  I worked with the 7s next door while the 6s finished their practice set in the classroom.  Then we switched.  It was most pleasing to see the way everyone worked.  Both groups in the classroom were focused and self-regulating for over an hour with very little interaction with a teacher (some students were with Ms. Taggert in the library).  That shows real maturity: well done!  For homework, the grade 7s are to finish pp.58-59 #1-12 and the grade 6s are to finish p.61 #1-4.

After lunch the good work continued.  We did an exercise that followed on the skills we introduced yesterday: drawing information from a video clip and analyzing which are the key points.  I used Part One of the documentary linked at the top of this post as an example.  The five bullets I chose were:

* 4000 years ago the Mesopotamian civilization ended.
* the climate has remained stable with a temperature around 50 degrees celsius.
* about 100 years ago information of the civilization was limited to that in the Bible.
* the rivers were good (life, irrigation, etc) and bad (regular flooding).
* wild rice from Turkey allowed the civilization to thrive.

There is NO right or wrong answer: just pick what YOU think is significant.  Please remember to sign your post.

We ended the day with a great 60-minute game of manhunt with Mr. Pond's class.  I was having a great game running down kids until they gave up when suddenly I had a big wipe out.  Now I have to explain to my family why I've got a big mud stain on my pants and sleeve.  Oh well: play hard; right?

    1. This looks good Christopher. You should post a comment with points learned from Part 2, 3, 4, or 5. These are from Part 1 and we covered Part 1 in class together. I hope everyone identifies which part they watched so we can get an idea of where in the documentary their facts are drawn.

  4. These are my points about Mesopotamia:

    - Its culture died off 4 milleniums ago

    - It was irrigated by Euphrates and Tigris rivers.

    - The rivers had deposited fertile soil

    - This is a bad thing, floods of the rivers in spring are able to destroy anything in their paths.

    - The people of Iraq eat fruits, vegetables, and yogurt just like the people of Mesopotamia during those 4 milleniums.
