Tuesday, 22 January

We started the day by logging onto the blog and responding to the following:

Yesterday we read "Scroll" 5 and you created a three-sentence summary.  Please post a your summary as a comment AND give a one or two sentence reflection of the story so far.

Anyone who did not compete their posted comment should do that for homework.

Next, we had a whole-school assembly where Mr. Paish outlined the results of the two surveys that the students completed before the Christmas break.  He then explained a system to highlight the school's key words that we will embark upon from now until the spring break.  Our grade 6 and 7 students will be key players in promoting a healthier, safer and warmer school experience for all.  I was quite pleased with our behaviour during the assembly and took time out of recess to explain that to the class (yes, I gave them a bit of an extension to make up for the time I "borrowed").

After recess we read and then moved into math.  In Math 7, I spent most of the class working with the group to assess sets of mixed numbers and decimals to order them from least to greatest.  This is not easy as students have to decide how best to compare "apples and oranges" but by the end of class, most students were demonstrating mastery.  We'll see tomorrow whether or not they retain that ability.

The start of a sample topic sentence.
Following lunch we read another chapter from the Ostia novel and then composed a summary.  I added a catch: they had to write a topic sentence that reflected on the whole chapter before getting to specific details.  During our debrief and sharing it became apparent that many students had difficulty with this.  We'll do the same routine next time to give practice at this key synthesis skill.  Anyone who did not compete all of supporting sentences for their summary should do that for homework.

We listened to half of a podcast on Egypt's Middle Kingdom and it was clear that without the PowerPoint slides to act as a bridge between the content and the students, that many had difficulty understanding.  I did this purposely because I want the students to understand their thinking processes and to have the ability to assess their learning.  Research has shown that this metacognition (thinking about one's thinking, or, thinking about how one thinks/processes ideas) is a key element in a student's growth.

We ended the day by working on our action pieces from last week's art lesson in preparation for tomorrow's lesson where we will begin to paint!  Have a good day.

Band homework:  Please practice pages 10 - 13 for Thursday.

Please bring something that doesn't require the microwave if you are having a practice or other activity during lunch.

  1. After searching for Nubia in all the rooms they find her curled up with Scuto in the storeroom. After that things were going well again. Mordecai was becoming good friends with her dad and her and Jonathon were teaching Nubia tons of Latin from Flavia’s scrolls of Anied. As Captain Geminus sets off on his voyage over seas Jonathon points to man thing and says their name as Nubia looks around curiously. But when they arrive home there is a trail of blood droplets leading straight to Jonathon’s front door.

  2. Flavia and Jonathan's family find Nubia in the storage room with the family dog Scuto, after this the dog and Nubia become inseperatable. Flavia's father goes on a trip to Greece, on the way home walking from the boat's berth Jonathan teaches Nubia a little bit of Latin when they discover a trail of blood leading to Jonathan's doorstep.

I think this book is very interesting, and keeps you in suspense for the next chapter.

  3. They find Nubia sleeping with the dog, Scuto, in the storeroom. A few days later Pater is going on a voyage. While walking Flavia overhears a conversation between her father and Cordius thinking about adopting Libertus. Her father starts the voyage but while walking back she and Jonathan soon discover a trail of blood coming from Jonathan's door.

I enjoy 'The Thieves of Ostia' because it's fun to read and tells you about what people would do in Rome.

  4. I think that the Thieves of Ostia is an okay book so far but isn't my favorite. I find it to choppy and instead of one big problem there are a bunch of little ones with not enough suspense.

  5. Nubia and the dog scuto become best of friends after they find Nubia sleeping with the dog after the party. After that incident they went to see Flavias father off on his sea trip. And on the way back Nubia and Jonathan find blood outside Flavias house.

At the end of the party Nubia went off and slept with the dog Scuto, this made Nubia really close to Scuto and since then she's slept with him in the garden every night. A few days after Flavia's birthday it was time for her pater to go off on his voyage and as everyone was walking back for waving him off they noticed there was a trail of blood leading to Jonathan's door step.
So far I think this book has been good because we are learning about the Romans and the way they live century's ago. Also it is intriguing to read another chapter because they usually end the chapter with a great closer and then you want to find out what happens next.

  7. Scroll 5: Everyone was mortified to find Nubia missing and set out to find her. Assuming she was in the house they searched until a light bulb went on and remembered that Scuto had stopped barking a while back so they opened the store room door, where he was put to stay out of the way and there she was with the dog and they became instantly attached. Later that day they set out to the harbour to find the Captain's boat named Myrtilla, after his beloved wife. He went out on his voyage and as the rest them left they found a trail of blood following behing Jonathan.

I think reading this book is a good way to learn about the Roman's culture and lifestyle and will help us when we study Ancient Rome. I also like reading this book because it gives you a wide vocabulary to think about and may also help you with your writing.

When they were searching the house they finally found Nubia in the storeroom with Scuto. Captain Geminus and his partner Cordius were going away again. Flavia and Jonathan taught new words to Nubia. When they returned from the harbor, they discovered a blood trail to the door of Jonathan's house.

I think Scuto is interesting, because, he is a cute dog.

  10. Thieves of Ostia scroll V
After Flavia's family finishes searching through all of the rooms they find Nubia sleeping in the storeroom with Scuto the dog. On a bright sunny day a few days later Flavia goes down to the harbor with her friends to see her father off on his sea voyage. As they walk back they teach Nubia words in Latin, then Nubia notices a trail of blood leading straight into Johnathon's house.

I think that The Thieves of Ostia is an alright book but it is not my favourite

Every body started to search frantically around for Nubia. They checked upstairs and down but couldn’t find her until they finally found her asleep with Scuto in the storeroom. The next day they all headed down to the docks to say goodbye to Flavia’s father who was going on a voyage as they walked down Jonathan was teaching Nubia words in Latin. On the way back from the docks Flavia, Jonathan and Nubia find a blood trail leading into Jonathan’s house.

I think that the book The Thieves of Ostia is really fun to read and its better than i thought it would be.

  12. At Flavia's birthday Nubia goes missing but they soon find her in the storage room sleeping with the Geminus's watchdog scuto. In the morning Flavia, Nubia, Jonathan, Libertus (Cordius's ex-slave now a freedman), Miriam, Dr.Mordecai and Scuto go to say goodbye to captain Geminus as he leaves on a sailing trip aboard the Myrilla (captain Geminus's ship). During the walk home Jonathan tries to teach Nubia some Latin but come home to a trail of blood leading into Jonathan, Miriam and Dr.Mordecai's house.

My thoughts on the story so far....
I think that the novel "The Thieves of Ostia" is exciting, intriguing and pulls the reader in. Like how the writer puts so many "plot twists" into the story. I find the names of the characters and places very interesting and challenging to say.

Flavia and her guests searched the whole house for Nubia but couldn’t find her anywhere until caudex reminded them that they hadn’t searched the storeroom where there dog Scuto had been put for the night. When they got to the storeroom and opened the door they saw Nubia curled up on the floor with her head on Scuto. A couple of days later Flavias father was going on a voyage so Flavia, Nubia and all of Jonathan’s family went down to the docks to bid there farewell but when they got back they all saw a trail of blood coming from Jonathan’s house.

I think the Thieves of Ostia is a really good book so fare.I like how they end every chapter with a big mystery it makes you want to read more.

  20. During the search for Nubia they check every room except the storage room; thats where they find Nubia curled up with their dog Scuto. Overtime Flavia's father and Mordicai become quite good freinds as well as Jonathon, Flavia and Nubia. A few days later Flavia, Jonathon, Nubia and Scuto were walking with Flavia's father. They were taking him to the docks because he was going on a voyage with his partner. They said goodbye and headed home. On the way back Jonathon was teaching Nubia new words by pointing to them and saying their names when he spotted blood leading to his front door.

I think The thieves of ostia is a decent book, the plot is good, the characters are interesting, and it really says what ancient Rome was like.

  21. It's Flavia's birthday and everyone is having a great time as some of the guests start to fade off Flavia notices that Nubia has gone missing. Everybody gets up to help look for her they all meet back in the living room as they realize that she was curled up next to the dog sound a sleep in the storage room. The next few weeks Jonathan was taking Nubia and Flavia to teach them how to speak Latin.

After realizing that Nubia is missing, Flavia, her father and their guests search the house frantically.
They then find her in the storeroom, asleep on the floor, cuddling with Scuto the dog.

I kind of like this book. It’s relatively exciting and has some good stuff about it, but books about ancient cities like Rome never really interests me. It’s written well, but I just don’t like this kind of story. IT IS NOT CAROLINE LAWRRENCE’S FAULT.

Where had Nubia gone, Flavia, Morcai, Jonathon, Miriam, and Coddex looked everywhere for her until they eventually found her sleeping in the cellar with the dog. A few days later Captain Geminus left on a voyage to Greece. While captain Geminus was away Jonathon came over frequently to help teach Nubia Latin. One day while Nubia and Flavia where out walking about their neighborhood Nubia spotted a trail of blood and it led to Jonathon’s house.

  26. scroll 5

The scroll begins on Flavia’s birthday, but Nubia has gone missing. Flavia and her guests look all over the house, but she is nowhere to be seen. They start to plan to look outside, when Mordecai asks to make sure they have looked in every room. The children say that they have, but Caudex makes them check the store room where Scuto the dog is. They find nubia curled up with Scuto in the store room.

The next morning Flavia’s father goes to the docks to go on a journey with his partner on his ship, the “myrtilla”. (sp?) Flavia, Nubia, and Jonathan are walking home, and Jonathan is teaching Nubia words in Latin when he sees drops of blood trailing towards his door.
